India

Unfortunately for those of us who appreciate Indian food, culture, and history, India still ranks worst on the 2016 List of 10 Worst Countries For Women Travelers due to terrorism and insurgency concerns as well as their usual astounding vendetta against women:  Meaning the usual high rates of rape, attacking women tourists with acid and other violent crime.

Rating: Dangerous and Obnoxious

India’s top safety concerns include rape, bombings, grenades, shooting, and kidnapping.  Horribly, a series of acid attacks against women tourists make India a particularly hazardous place for women to visit. The Indian justice system continues to be abysmal, though some areas are making it easier to report an attack and there are efforts to speed cases through the justice system.

All the countries that we checked, as well as travel agencies backed by Japanese and Chinese governments, issued warnings and advisories about India.  Rape continues to be an enormous problem with Madhya Pradesh leading in numbers of rapes, followed by Uttar Pradesh, and Maharastra though Delhi also continues to have high rates.  The United States categorically warns against women travelling alone in India due to the likelihood of sexual assault and harassment. They also list many other hazards in India (including infectious disease, intrareligious violence, and cyclones).

The Aussie Travel Advisory warns women to be careful in all parts of India even when traveling in groups. Canada issued a Travel Advisory warning its citizens to avoid all travel to Jammu, Kashmir, Manipur, Ghujarat Rajasthan, and Punjab near the border. It suggests avoiding non-essential travel to Manipur and areas of Arunachal Pradesh near the border, and to ‘exercise a high degree of caution’ in general.

If you want to go to India or must go:  Rishikesh is a good destination with safe accommodations that is particularly good for women who want to travel to India because of Yoga and for women traveling alone.

Conclusion:  Perhaps you are thinking it would be better to go where a woman can travel freely and safely, if so, please refer to our 10 safest countries for women tourists.
